Courage, Patience and Stamina

Today is Remembrance Day. Although we Canadians have a reputation for being humble, we are not bashful about proclaiming our country to be the Greatest of all.

In recent years we have been rightly challenged to scrutinize how we have treated all peoples, and how we have cared for our beautiful land stretching from sea to sea to sea.

This examination of conscience and the corrective actions required can only make us greater.

My father fought on a destroyer in World War II, and members of my family currently serve in the Canadian Navy.

This month, however, I am featuring the work of my son, Kevin, whose courage, patience and stamina rank next to any brave seaman.

Livinginthe EyeKevin is an artist as well as the author of the memoir, LIVING IN THE EYE: LIFE WITH AUTISM. He experiences life as one lived in the eye of a tornado.

“Inside the eye of autism, I can never turn my brain off from colours, sounds, and a constant storm of thoughts and emotions difficult to express.

“And yet, within its whirling walls, the eye is the safest, calmest part of a tornado. It’s my refuge from the world beyond my private space – a world often visited by chaos, unpredictability and frustrations.

“It is my hope that, in the telling of my story, others may find inspiration and courage to dare challenge life in whatever form it is presented to them.”  Kevin Vasey

Prior to writing LIVING IN THE EYE: Life with Autism, Kevin co-authored THE ROAD TRIP: Life with Autism (Novalis, 2005).

He has provided the voice and model for characters on the Autism spectrum in several of my novels.

Kevin’s biography is available at amazon,ca, amazon.com, The Book Keeper, Sarnia, and the Olde Post Office, Petrolia
